How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)
Buy xylol (xylene) in bulk and the supplier should hand over a certificate of analysis, or COA, with the shipment. It is easy to file and forget, but the COA is the document that actually tells you what is in the drum you received, batch by batch. It is a different thing from a safety data sheet, and knowing how to read it separates a careful buyer from a hopeful one.
A COA reports the measured results for one specific lot. For xylene, expect to see lines such as:
- Product name and grade: what it is and to which specification, for example mixed xylenes, solvent grade.
- Lot or batch number: the identifier tying the results to the material you actually got.
- Purity or assay: the total xylene content, often as a percentage.
- Isomer breakdown: the split of ortho, meta, and para, plus ethylbenzene.
- Water content: moisture, which matters for corrosion and for water-sensitive uses.
- Appearance and color: often a clarity note and a color scale reading.
- Distillation range and density: physical checks that confirm the product is on-spec.
The key idea is that a COA reports actual test results for a real batch, not a generic description. That makes it the tool for two jobs: confirming the material meets the specification you ordered before you use it, and giving you a traceable record if a problem shows up later, since the lot number links a bad batch back to its results. For water-sensitive or high-purity work, the water and purity lines are the ones to check first; for solvent use, the assay and appearance usually tell you what you need.
Keep the distinction clear: the safety data sheet tells you how to handle xylene safely and applies to the product in general, while the certificate of analysis tells you what this particular batch actually contains. A buyer who reads both knows both how to work with the solvent and whether the drum in front of them is what they paid for. When a result sits outside the stated specification, that is the moment to raise it with the supplier rather than after the material is in a process.
