A Complete Guide to Acetone

Acetone is the solvent most people have smelled without thinking about it: it is the sharp odor of nail polish remover. Behind that everyday face is one of the most versatile industrial solvents there is, and it behaves very differently from an aromatic like xylol (xylene). Knowing where each one shines is half of choosing the right solvent for a job.

The essentials:

  • What it is: the simplest ketone, propanone (C3H6O), a clear, thin liquid.
  • Evaporation: very fast, one of the quickest-drying common solvents.
  • Mixing: unlike xylene, it mixes freely with water as well as with most organic solvents.
  • Flash point: very low, around minus 20 °C, so it is extremely flammable.
  • Odor: sharp and distinctive, and it flashes off almost as fast as you apply it.

That combination makes acetone the go-to for fast, clean jobs. It removes nail polish and many inks, cleans uncured resins and adhesives, degreases metal that must dry instantly, and thins fiberglass resin and some lacquers. It dissolves a lot, but its speed is both its strength and its limit: it flashes off so quickly that it struggles with slow, deliberate work like brushing out a coating, which is exactly where a slower solvent such as xylene does better.

On safety, acetone’s extreme flammability is the headline, since its vapor ignites easily and travels, so open flames and sparks are out of the question. Its toxicity is lower than that of the aromatic solvents, and it is less of a chronic health concern than xylene or toluene, but it still dries and irritates skin and should be used with ventilation. It also attacks many plastics, so it is not safe on every surface. The short version: pick acetone when you want speed, water-mixing, and a clean flash-off, and reach for xylol when you need a stronger, slower solvent that lingers long enough to do heavier work.
