How to Read GHS Labels and Pictograms
The red-bordered diamonds and the words “Danger” or “Warning” on a solvent can are not decoration; they are a standardized language. GHS, the Globally Harmonized System, gives chemicals the same warning format worldwide, so a can of xylol (xylene) carries the same core information whether it is labeled in Ohio or Osaka. Learn to read one label and you can read them all.
Every GHS label is built from the same parts:
- Pictograms: the red-bordered diamonds that flag hazard types at a glance.
- Signal word: “Danger” for the more severe hazards, “Warning” for the less severe.
- Hazard statements: standardized phrases describing the risk, such as “highly flammable liquid and vapor.”
- Precautionary statements: what to do about it, from “keep away from heat” to first-aid steps.
- Product and supplier details: the identity of the chemical and who to contact.
Xylene makes a good worked example. Its label typically shows the flame pictogram for a flammable liquid, the exclamation mark for irritation and harmful effects, and the health-hazard pictogram, the human silhouette with a starburst, for the longer-term effects of repeated exposure. The signal word is usually “Danger.” Reading those together tells you the essentials before you open the can: it burns, it irritates skin and airways, and repeated exposure carries a real health risk, so ventilation, gloves, and distance from flame are not optional.
The value of GHS is that this holds for any container. Once you recognize the flame, the exclamation mark, and the health-hazard figure, you can size up an unfamiliar solvent in seconds, and the hazard and precautionary statements fill in the detail. The label is the short version of the safety data sheet, and it is worth the ten seconds it takes to read before the cap comes off.
