Removing Graffiti and Adhesive with Xylol
Spray paint and sticky residue share a weakness: both are held together by resins that a strong solvent will dissolve, and xylol (xylene) is strong enough to break the grip. That makes it a common choice for lifting graffiti off masonry and for clearing the gummy film left behind by labels, tape, and old decals. The catch is that the same power can harm whatever the paint or glue is stuck to, so the surface decides whether xylol is the right tool.
On graffiti, xylol works by softening the paint film so it can be wiped or pressure-rinsed away. It does well on hard, non-porous, uncoated surfaces like bare metal, glass, and dense stone. It is riskier on painted walls, plastics, and sealed or porous surfaces, where it can strip the good coating along with the tag or drive pigment deeper into the pores. On any painted or finished wall, test a hidden patch first, and on porous masonry expect to need repeated light passes rather than one heavy soak.
For adhesive residue, the approach is gentler. A little xylol on a cloth, held against the gum for a moment and then wiped, dissolves most label and tape glue and the tacky remains of stickers. It is effective on glass and metal, and it clears adhesive that water and mild cleaners only smear. Keep it off the plastics it attacks, acrylic, polystyrene, ABS, and off painted trim, since it can cloud or lift them faster than it clears the glue.
Whatever the job, the safety basics hold: gloves, good ventilation, no open flame, and a quick soap-and-water wash of the cleaned area afterward. When the surface is something xylol would damage, a milder citrus or specialty remover is the better first try, with xylol held in reserve for the residue that will not budge.
