Using It as a Thinner and Cleaner

Two of the most common reasons to keep xylol (xylene) on hand are thinning oil-based finishes and cleaning up after them. It is good at both because it dissolves the same oily resins that make those products stick, while evaporating slowly enough to stay useful during the work.

As a thinner, xylol reduces the viscosity of oil-based paints, enamels, varnishes, and many industrial coatings so they brush or spray evenly. Because it leaves slowly, it helps a film flow out and level rather than drying with ridges, which is why it is favored for hard enamels and spray work. The craft is in restraint: a small addition, often well under ten percent, is usually enough, and over-thinning weakens the cured film. Check the coating’s label first, since many name xylene and set a maximum.

As a cleaner, xylol shines at jobs mineral spirits struggle with. It cuts fresh and semi-cured paint from spray guns, brushes, and rollers, lifts grease and tar from tools and metal, and removes overspray and adhesive residue. The same strength that makes it effective is also its risk: it can soften plastics, dull some finishes, and attack rubber seals, so test on a hidden spot and keep it off anything you want to protect.

Whether thinning or cleaning, the handling is the same. Work with good ventilation, wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection, keep it away from flames and sparks, and never pour the used solvent down a drain.
