In Automotive Refinishing and Degreasing

Body shops have leaned on xylol (xylene) for decades, and it still turns up in the modern paint booth even as water-based systems spread. It sits in the middle ground between a fast, aggressive solvent and a slow one, which suits the pace of spraying automotive coatings. A painter reaches for it in a few specific spots rather than as a general-purpose cleaner.

Where it earns its place on the bench:

  • Reducing paint: as a component of the reducer that thins basecoats and single-stage enamels to spray viscosity, giving flow and leveling in warm conditions.
  • Degreasing panels: as a strong wax-and-grease remover that strips old polish, silicone, and road film so fresh paint bonds.
  • Gun and equipment cleanup: as a solvent that clears semi-cured paint from spray guns and lines that milder cleaners leave behind.

The same strength that makes it useful is what forces caution. Xylol will soften and attack existing paint and clearcoat if it dwells, so on a finished panel it is for controlled prep and quick spot work, wiped and moved along, not left to soak. It is flammable, its vapor is heavier than air and pools in a booth, and repeated skin and lung exposure is a real health concern, so shops run it with proper ventilation, respirators, and gloves. Read the coating maker’s data sheet too, since many modern systems specify their own reducers and cleaners rather than straight xylol.
