Reading a Xylol Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

Every container of xylol (xylene) should come with a Safety Data Sheet, the standardized document that tells you exactly what is in the product and how to handle it safely. Learning to read one turns a wall of small print into a quick safety check. This guide walks through what an SDS covers and which parts matter most.

An SDS follows a fixed 16-section format set by the international GHS standard, so every sheet, from any supplier, is laid out the same way. You rarely need all 16 for everyday use. These are the sections worth finding first:

  • Section 2, Hazards: the flammability and health warnings, hazard statements, and pictograms at a glance.
  • Section 3, Composition: confirms whether you have mixed xylenes or a single isomer, and how much ethylbenzene is present.
  • Section 4, First aid: what to do for skin, eye, inhalation, and ingestion exposure. Read this before you need it.
  • Section 7, Handling and storage: ventilation, ignition control, and storage conditions specific to that product.
  • Section 8, Exposure controls: the exposure limits (such as the 100 ppm OSHA limit) and the protective equipment to wear.
  • Section 9, Physical properties: the exact flash point, boiling point, and density for that grade.

The other sections cover firefighting, spill response, toxicology, disposal, and transport details, all useful when a situation calls for them. Keep the SDS where the product is stored, not in a binder across the building, and glance at Sections 2, 4, and 8 before any first-time job. A product can be labeled xylol or xylene and still differ in grade and additives from the last can you used, and the SDS is where those differences show up.
