Flash Point vs. Autoignition Temperature

Two fire-safety numbers appear on every solvent’s data sheet, and they are easy to mix up: flash point and autoignition temperature. Both describe when a liquid like xylol (xylene) can catch fire, but they answer different questions, and confusing them can make a solvent seem safer, or more dangerous, than it is.

Flash point is the low one, and the one that matters most day to day. It is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to form an ignitable mixture in the air just above it. At or above its flash point, all the liquid needs is a spark or flame to ignite. For xylene the flash point is roughly 27-32 °C, close to a warm room, which is why it is classed as a flammable liquid and why any ignition source nearby is a real hazard.

Autoignition temperature is the high one. It is the temperature at which the vapor bursts into flame on its own, with no spark or flame at all, purely from heat. For xylene that is far higher, around 460-530 °C. You are unlikely to reach it in ordinary work, but it is why solvent must be kept away from very hot surfaces like manifolds, hot plates, and heating elements, where no open flame is needed to start a fire.

Put together, the two numbers frame the danger. The low flash point means xylene vapor is ready to ignite at everyday temperatures, so the practical rule is to keep sparks, flames, and cigarettes away and to control the vapor with ventilation. The high autoignition temperature is a reminder that heat alone can do the job if a surface is hot enough. A solvent with a flash point near room temperature deserves respect the moment the cap comes off, long before anything gets truly hot.
