Safety and Hazards: How to Handle It Safely
Xylol (xylene) is a useful solvent that deserves respect, because it is both flammable and capable of affecting your health if you handle it carelessly. The risks are well understood and preventable. Two hazards stand out. Xylol burns easily: its vapors are heavier than air and can travel along the ground to an ignition source, then flash back. And its vapors are harmful in high or repeated doses. Breathing them in is the most common exposure, and short-term overexposure causes headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea, while very high concentrations can cause loss of coordination or worse. The vapors also irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, and repeated skin contact strips natural oils, which leads to dryness and dermatitis. Chronic high exposure has been linked to effects on the nervous system, and it may harm the liver and kidneys.
In the United States, three agencies set exposure limits, and they agree closely.

Working safely with xylol comes down to a short routine.
- Ventilate. Work outdoors or with strong local exhaust, and use an organic-vapor respirator where the air cannot be cleared.
- Protect your skin and eyes with chemical-resistant (for example nitrile) gloves and splash goggles.
- Control ignition sources. No smoking, flames, or sparking tools nearby, and ground containers when transferring.
- Store it in original or approved containers, tightly sealed, cool, and away from sunlight and oxidizers.
- Dispose of it as hazardous waste. Never pour xylol down a drain or onto soil.
A quick test for ventilation: if you can smell xylol strongly, your ventilation is not good enough. Your nose is not a reliable meter, though. You notice the odor well below the harmful level, but you can also grow used to it and stop noticing, which is why measured ventilation, not your sense of smell, should guide safe use. Take breaks in fresh air, keep the lid on between uses, and never work near a pilot light, heater, or running engine.
