A Complete Guide to MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone)
MEK is the solvent professionals reach for when they need serious dissolving power in a hurry. Short for methyl ethyl ketone, it is one of the strongest and fastest of the common solvents, and it turns up wherever coatings, adhesives, and plastics need to be dissolved or welded. It behaves quite differently from an aromatic like xylol (xylene), and that difference is what defines its niche.
The essentials:
- What it is: a ketone, butanone (C4H8O), a clear liquid with a sharp, sweetish odor.
- Strength: very high; dissolves a wide range of resins and plastics.
- Evaporation: fast, one of the quicker-drying industrial solvents.
- Mixing: partially miscible with water and freely miscible with most organic solvents.
- Flash point: very low, around minus 9 °C, so it is highly flammable.
Its speed and reach make it a workhorse. MEK thins and cleans up many coatings and inks, activates and cleans surfaces before bonding, and is a key ingredient in some contact cements and plastic solvent cements, where it actually softens the plastic so two pieces fuse. It also strips and cleans where a gentler solvent stalls. That aggressiveness is the point: it dissolves more than xylene does and flashes off faster, which is ideal for cleaning and bonding but wrong for slow, brush-out finish work.
On safety, MEK’s very low flash point is the first concern, since its vapor ignites easily and travels along the floor, so ignition sources are out of the question. It is also a strong irritant and a defatting solvent that dries and cracks skin quickly, and its vapor is harmful to breathe, so ventilation, chemical-resistant gloves, and eye protection are essential. Set beside xylol, MEK is the faster, stronger, more aggressive ketone; xylene is the slower aromatic you choose when you want more working time and less bite.
