Does It Corrode Metal?

Metal is the reassuring case in the compatibility list. Xylol (xylene) does not corrode ordinary metals, and it is routinely stored and shipped in steel cans and drums for exactly that reason. The solvent is chemically stable and does not react with iron, steel, or aluminium the way an acid or a salt solution would. The nuances that do exist are less about the metal and more about what rides along with the solvent.

The real corrosion risk in a solvent container is not the xylene at all; it is water. Dry xylene does nothing to steel, but if moisture gets into a can, whether from a loose lid, condensation, or contamination, that water can settle out and rust the steel from the inside, and a rusty container can then taint or leak the solvent. This is why storage advice for xylol keeps coming back to sealing the container tightly and keeping it dry: you are protecting the can as much as the contents.

So the honest answer is that xylol is safe on and in metal, which is a large part of why it is easy to store and handle. Use steel or other common metal containers with confidence, keep them sealed and dry so moisture cannot start rust, and inspect old cans for corrosion before trusting them. The metal is not the weak link with xylene; a wet or failing container is.
