On Fiberglass and Gelcoat: Boat and RV Repair

Ask around a boatyard and you will hear xylol (xylene) mentioned as often as any other solvent, because fiberglass and gelcoat work sits right in its wheelhouse. Cured polyester and vinyl-ester laminate resist xylol well, so it can clean and prep those surfaces without dissolving them. The care comes in because the same jobs put xylol next to resins, waxes, and plastics that it does affect.

The main reason it shows up in composite work is surface prep. Before bonding, patching, or recoating, a hull or panel has to be free of mold-release wax, grease, and old polish, and xylol is a strong wipe-down solvent that cuts that film and flashes off clean, leaving a surface ready for new resin or gelcoat to grip. It also thins some polyester resins and gelcoats and cleans uncured resin off tools before it kicks. On fully cured fiberglass, a xylol wipe is generally safe, which is why it is a shop staple for the wax-and-grease step.

The cautions are about everything around the laminate. Xylol will soften or craze many of the plastics found on a boat or RV, acrylic windows, ABS trim, polycarbonate lenses, so keep it off them. It can dull or lift an existing painted or clear-coated finish, so on a topcoat you want to keep, test first and wipe rather than soak. And on fresh gelcoat that has not fully cured, a strong solvent can do more harm than good. Fiberglass professionals also follow the resin maker’s data sheet, since some systems call for a specific prep solvent, and they treat the fire and vapor hazards seriously in the enclosed spaces of a hull or cabin.
