Is It Safe on Wood and Painted Surfaces?
Wood is a trickier case for xylol (xylene) than a simple yes or no. The bare wood fiber itself is not really harmed by the solvent, but almost no wood you meet in a house is bare: it is stained, sealed, oiled, painted, or varnished, and it is that finish, not the wood, that decides whether xylol helps or ruins the piece.
On raw, unfinished wood, xylol behaves like any solvent on an absorbent surface. It soaks in, evaporates, and leaves the wood itself intact, which is why it can be used to wipe away grease or old oil before refinishing. The main effects are cosmetic and temporary: it can darken the wood while wet and may raise or move natural resins in oily species. Bare wood is the forgiving case.
Finished wood is where caution starts. Xylol is strong enough to soften, dull, or lift many clear coats and paints, and how a given finish reacts depends on what it is. It readily attacks shellac and many lacquers, can soften some varnishes and oil-based paints on contact, and will haze a fragile finish even with a quick wipe. That cuts both ways: the same action makes xylol a tool for stripping or spot-repairing an old finish on purpose, but a hazard to any finish you want to keep. On painted trim or a finished tabletop, a splash left to sit can leave a permanent dull mark.
The safe rule is to treat the finish as the thing at risk. Test on a hidden spot first, keep xylol off any coating you value, and if you are using it to clean rather than strip, wipe fast and do not let it dwell. When the goal is to protect a finish rather than remove it, a milder cleaner is the better first choice, with xylol reserved for the refinishing jobs where removing the old coating is the point.
